3 weeks of pain was worth it
I am going to be first author in a JAMA article in the 10/22 health of the nation issue.

For those of you not in medicine/academia, this is a super big deal. Unimaginably big.

And it is basically unheard of for someone's first paper to be published there.

I am very, very happy. I could not be happier unless someone gifted me with a whole lot more sleep.

Yay! Delurking to say congratulations!

I friended you a while back on keyne's recommendation. As a fellow academic, I like the way you think. As someone dealing with the medical system from the care-receiver end (well, relative of patient) I've been really appreciating your perspective from the other side. Helps a lot with the empathy, which is pretty needed in our situation right now!

Good luck to you and your loved one. I'm glad I can help with the empathy - having been both a patient and a care giver it is very, very, very hard to muster sometimes...even when you know the inside story.

Woot!

Given your exhaustion level, I'll do the Dance of Joy on your behalf. Congratulations, genius!

I do understand what that means, and it is extremely cool. Congratulations!

Did you hear me on NPR? I'm a rock star!
From: (Anonymous) Date: October 30th, 2008 01:57 pm (UTC) (Link)

Wow!

You did an NPR broadcast?! Nice! It's pretty tough to break NPR, from a PR standpoint. Good job. :)

Re: Wow!

Thanks. I was thrilled. I neglected to tell my mom -- she randomly heard me on the radio and nearly drove off the road!

woohoo!! yay!

Hey, I went to take a class on Congress last week and health care came up several times. Sometime after you have more sleep if you are interested I will tell you about it.
figent_figary From: figent_figary Date: October 28th, 2008 09:22 pm (UTC) (Link)
I'm interested. I'm slept. Tell me about it!
From: euziere Date: October 30th, 2008 01:15 am (UTC) (Link)
Most of it has fallen out of my brain! argh.

I did attend a hearing where the witnesses were testifying to the value of medical homes (?) and having patients' records be centralized and easily accessible. It was pretty interesting, even though none of the all-cherrypicked witnesses cared enough to read their canned pre-approved statement in anything other than a monotone. Then the Senators started asking questions and there questions were all along the lines of "but wouldn't people be better served by more *choice* among insurance plans?" Thus showing not just obliviousness to the needs of the non-privileged but also a misunderstanding of how choice works. People WANT more choices, but they're not really all that helpful.

That's fairly awesome, with a side of awesome sauce. Congrats.
figent_figary From: figent_figary Date: October 28th, 2008 09:23 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thanks. I'm still a little high from both the publication and the press coverage.
phawkwood From: phawkwood Date: October 29th, 2008 01:05 am (UTC) (Link)
I'll just bet. I never get fun press coverage, tho my butt has been on TV several times as I bend over to pick a pt up.
figent_figary From: figent_figary Date: October 29th, 2008 02:03 pm (UTC) (Link)
I was offered some TV coverage but given that I'm 9 mo. pregnant and I was afraid they might need a wide angle lens to fit me in the picture I politely declined (i.e. ran away screaming).
From: (Anonymous) Date: October 30th, 2008 02:01 pm (UTC) (Link)
Wait, you're doing all of this while 9 months preggo? Good lord woman, take a break! I worked while pregnant but geez, I only had to sit at a desk. Congrats on the baby-to-be and the NPR hit. :)

Thanks! I'm wrapping up my ED shifts this week - 10 hours on my feet and running for traumas is starting to be not so fun.

Absofrickinglutely! I miss both of you like crazy and need good food. Maybe a trip to mexican town?
shekkara From: shekkara Date: October 29th, 2008 12:09 am (UTC) (Link)
Difficult timing in the near future - we have a wedding this weekend, and then we''re away for vacation; however, a Mexican Town trip is definitely in order. We've discovered some great local places that are not on the tourist map, and we've also discovered some other places that will merit exploration. (My mental picture of the geographical size of Mexican Town has quadrupled at least if not more.)
figent_figary From: figent_figary Date: October 29th, 2008 02:05 pm (UTC) (Link)
Nice! Where are you going for vacation? My mental map of Mexican town is non existent so I will place myself in your competent hands. I should be good for another couple of weeks (cross your fingers!) and, after that, I hear small ones are relatively mobile and quiet for the first couple of weeks.

Ho-oly shit dude, that's amazingly cool!

Mind you, I've no idea what your research is like, but from reading this LJ it's perfectly clear that you are a good and lucid and effective writer. So, well spotted, JAMA. :)
figent_figary From: figent_figary Date: October 28th, 2008 09:26 pm (UTC) (Link)
It was actually amazing. I made the newspapers and everything. I felt for one brief moment like a rock star as opposed to an overworked, underslept ED doc and researcher. Thanks for your kind words!
From: (Anonymous) Date: September 24th, 2008 02:33 pm (UTC) (Link)

Congrats!

While I'm neither in medicine or academia, I do work in the media business...you're quite right - that's an outstanding achievement! JAMA is very, very well-respected. Congratulations on a job well done. Now, where's our new entry? (I kid, I kid) :D

I am definitely intrigued. We'll talk after the election....
